The University of Sheffield (USFD) hosted a Workshop during the period 11th-13th January 2006, entitled “Tribology of Nanocomposite Coatings” in the Department of Engineering Materials, where the research group of Prof. Allan Matthews is based.  27 people attended, both from DESHNAF Partner institutions and from other UK and European Universities and Companies, including representatives from: Groningen University (The Netherlands), Euro-Consultants Ltd,Ramat-Gan, Tel Aviv University, Ben Gurion University, HAIT (Israel), Tecvac Limited, Delphi Limited, Surrey University (UK), Max-Planck Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching, Deutscher Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt, Stuttgart, Technical University, Munich (Germany) and the University of Cyprus.

The opening invited talk was given by Dr. Yutao Pei of Groningen University, on the topic of the design of nanostructured TiC/a-C:H superhard nanocomposite coatings.  Amongst those making presentations were also two Research Staff (Dr Aleksey Yerokhin, Tony Pilkington) and four PhD Students (Martynas Audronis, Raja Khan, John Eichler, Kostas Kanakis) from Sheffield, together with a former PhD Student of the group, now working in UK Industry (Dr. Christos Tsotsos).  The Workshop attendees were also shown around the Engineering Materials Department’s Sorby Centre for Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis by the Centre’s technical research staff (Dr. Heath Bagshaw). In addition, Dr Rob Dwyer-Joyce, of the Mechanical Engineering Department, made a presentation on other Tribology activities within Sheffield University
